Workshop on “INTEGRATED GROUNDWATER MODELLING, 13-16 April 2026.

The Tunisian Committee of Hydrogeology (TCH/CTH) organized a workshop on “INTEGRATED GROUNDWATER MODELLING – from data acquisition to informed decision making” from 13 to 16 April 2026. The workshop was open to participants actively involved in Hydrogeology, Groundwater modelling, Geochemistry and GIS. It was intended for Master’s and PhD students and early career researchers and professionals from universities, research institutions, and groundwater companies. The workshop combined one scientific conference and hands-on training sessions, offering participants the opportunity to strengthen their practical skills, share experiences, and discuss key challenges in groundwater modelling.

Venue: The workshop took place at the National Engineering School of Tunis (ENIT).

Day 1:

Opening: The opening session was honored by:

Conference: Groundwater flow and solute transport modelling, provided by Dr. Faten Jarraya-Horriche from LGR CERTE. An overview on modelling was presented, including types and classifications of models as well as the laws and equations. A workflow outlining the various stages of groundwater modeling was given.

Session 1: Geological modelling. This session was presented by Dr. Nesrine Ghouili from LGR CERTE in place of Dr. Imen Hassen ENIT

Session 2a: Groundwater Flow Modelling using Processing MODFLOW. This first session-stage was provided by Dr. Faten Jarraya-Horriche and Dr. Nesrine Ghouili from LGR CERTE. The second stage of this session continued on Day 3.

Day 2:

Session 3: Estimation of the Evapotranspiration (ETP) based on Earth Observation (EO) data using Google Earth Engine. This session was insured by Dr Fatma Trabelsi and Eng Salsebil Bel Hadj Ali Salsebil from ESIM. It focused on the practical application of EO data and the GEE platform to estimate evapotranspiration (ETP) a key component for assessing aquifer recharge. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises to explore EO datasets, apply processing workflows on GEE, and better understand how ETP can be integrated into groundwater modeling. The session emphasized the importance of data-driven approaches to improve water resource management, especially under increasing climate change.

Day 3:

Session 2b: Groundwater Flow Modelling using Processing MODFLOW, delivered by Dr. Faten Jarraya-Horriche and Dr. Nesrine Ghouili from LGR CERTE. During the first and second stage of this session, participants gained fundamental skills, from building the conceptual model to performing calibration under both steady-state and transient conditions. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the effects of faults, pumping, and hydraulic barrier. Participants learned also how to analyze model outputs, such as hydraulic heads, water balance, drawdown, and seawater intrusion as well as the procedures for model calibration.

Day 4:

Session 4: Groundwater recharge estimation using HYDRUS-1D, delivered by Dr. Maroua Bouteffeha and Dr. Aroua Manai from LMHE ENIT. Participants were introduced to the fundamental principles of water flow in variably saturated soils and the use of HYDRUS-1D for simulating infiltration and estimating groundwater recharge. The session covered the key steps of model setup, parameterization, and interpretation of simulation outputs, with a focus on applications in Hydrology and water resources management.

Session 5: Groundwater Geochemical Modeling, delivered by Dr. Fadoua Hamzaoui and Dr. Nizar Troudi from FST, and Dr. Nesrine Nasri and Dr. Arwa Manai from LMHE ENIT. Participants received training on the fundamental concepts of water geochemistry, covering the full workflow from data collection and sampling to laboratory analysis and processing of results using various geochemical methods. They were introduced to geochemical tools and codes, including Diagram, PHREEQC pitzer and Grapher software’s, and learned how to interpret results to determine the origins of geochemical composition and identify the processes responsible for mineralization.

AGIC 2019, 28-30 Mars 2019

The Atlas Georesources International Congress was first launched in 2017 by the Laboratory of Georessources (LGR) at the Centre for Water Research and Technologies. This year AGIC2019 is organized by the LGR and the Tunisian IAH chapter, the Tunisian Committee of Hydrogeology at the Association Eau et Développement. The congress was held in Hammamet Tunisia (from 28th to 30th March 2019) and focused on novelties advances and study cases dealing with Applied Geosciences for Groundwater. As sustainable management of groundwater resources should not rely on the hydrogeological knowledge only, the congress discussed multidisciplinary approaches where applied geosciences combined with modelling tools could bring new information and a significant knowledge to the groundwater system functioning and identify priority issues and adaptive measures mainly to global change. With more than 100 participants from 15 countries, the congress has successfully addressed current and future challenges in groundwater with four keynote and more than 80 oral and poster presentations and four exhibitors. Oral and poster presentations awards were attributed to Janja Vrzel (LMU, Germany) and to Yassin Kadri (LGR-CERTE, Tunisia) respectively. The laureates received valuable Books offered by the IAH.

AGIC2019 “Applied Geosciences for Groundwater”, 28-30 March 2019

The Loboratory of Georesources (LGR) at the Centre for Water Research and Technologies and the Tunisian Committee of Hydrogeology (TCH) at the “Association Eau et Développement” (AED)”, which is the the Tunisian Chapter of “International Association of Hydrogeology (IAH)” will organize the 2nd Atlas Gesoresources International Congress (AGIC2019) “Applied Geosciences for Groundwater” from 28 to 30 March 2019 in Hammamet, Tunisia.

On behalf of the Organizing Committe, we are delighted to announce that abstract submission is now open for AGIC2019

Register online and submit your abstract no later than 15 December 2018.

Abstract must be original contribution to one of the following conference topics:

‐ Topic 1 Global change and Groundwater

‐ Topic 2 Groundwater Quality and Pollution

‐ Topic 3 Groundwater Exploration & Monitoring

‐ Topic 4 Groundwater Modelling and Risk Management

Only electronic submission will be considered for review by the international panel of the scientific committee. Abstract must be in English and up to 2000 characters. It must be text format only and exempted from any illustration, tables, diagrams, etc. Key words should not exceed five words separated by semicolon and must be relevant to the abstract content.

Workshop on “Modelling for sustainable Groundwater Management”, October 23th-27th, 2017

The Tunisian Committee of Hydrogeology (TCH/CTH) organized a workshop on “Modelling for sustainable Groundwater Management” in Tunis (Tunisia), October 23th to 27th, 2017.

The workshop aimed at learning and promoting the discovery of knowledge and decision-making tools applied to the functioning of groundwater sources, enabling participants exchange of information, comparative practical knowledge, as well as drawing up new proposals with a view of improving work-plans. It focused on the development of mathematical solutions of hydrogeological models and advanced information technologies as well as their application to groundwater issues where social, economic and environmental aspects are integrated to achieve feasible proposals for a sustainable development. The workshop took place in the Faculty of Sciences of Tunis.

The workshop was inaugurated by the President of the University of Tunis EL Manar, the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of Tunis and the General Director of the Centre for Water Research and Technologies.

The workshop was sponsored by UNAM (Mexico), Laboratoires Mixtes Internationaux (LMI), Laboratoire de Géoressources (LGR), Unité d’Environnements Sédimentaires, Systèmes Pétroliers & Caractérisation des Réservoirs (UESSPCR), Unité de Recherche de Géochimie et de Géologie de l’Environnement (URGGE), Laboratoire de Modélisation en Hydraulique et Environnement (LMHE) and the design Office GEOHYDRO.

The organization of the workshop was successful. There were six keynote speakers and a coaching staff, 17 PhD, Msc students, as well as early career researchers and professionals.
